Once after a root canal I experienced a "numb tongue" that lasted 3-4 months. It felt like my tongue was twice the size and it distorted taste and occasionally caused me to slur my words. That's how I feel about our political system now. Fortunately, the numbness in my tongue went away after a time and hasn't returned. That's what gives me hope right now.

My wife and I were talking yesterday about the abusive nature of the current regime. Numbness and too much openness to the pain both seem dangerous to ourselves and to the good of the whole. Your prescription of a middle way seems right.

Dana, I really appreciate this approach. It provides a path between numbness and perpetual outrage. Continuous outrage doesn't seem like a constructive or healthy condition either. What you are trying may provide a vantage of relative calm for approaching current conditions in a useful and compassionate way.
